History of District 7030
The roots of District 7030 began in
1972 when RI President Roy Hickman appointed the Charter President
of the Rotary Club of St. Kitts Fred Lam the Administrative Advisor
of Group P, which comprised of Rotary clubs in St. Kitts,
Montserrat, U.S. and British Virgin Islands. During his term in
office President Fred established Rotary clubs in Antigua and
Dominica and set in motion plans for the first Rotary Conference in
the Caribbean which was held in St. Kitts on June 7th - 11th, 1973.
At this conference the Rotary clubs represented unanimously agreed
to petition to RI to establish a district in the region, and on July
1st, 1974 District 404 was formed with Dr. John Watts of the Rotary
Club of Grenada elected Director General at the First District 404
conference held in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
The Rotaract movement was introduced
to the District when the Rotary Club of Grenada chartered the
Rotaract Club of Grenada on January 21st, 1978. In 1981 however the
District was split into Districts 404 and 405 to ease the
administrative duties of the District Governor who at the time had
to administer over 25 countries from the Bahamas to French Guiana.
District 404 which later became
District 7020
consists of clubs in the north of the Caribbean, while District 405
consists of the clubs in the south, currently in District 7030.
Over the course of the next few years
several other Rotaract clubs were established in the District. The
first club in Trinidad, the Rotaract Club of San Fernando, was
chartered in 1984, while the Rotaract clubs of St. Lucia, Roseau
(Dominica), and Georgetown (Guyana) were chartered in 1985. Another
three clubs, the Rotaract Clubs of Kingstown (St. Vincent), St.
Lucia South, and St. Kitts were chartered in 1986 before the
Rotaract District was formed.
In 1986 Rotarian Earl Johnson of the
Rotary Club of Dominica along with Rotarians Mike Moncherry and Tom
Alexander of the Rotary Club of St. Lucia worked on establishing a
Rotaract District. The eight clubs in existence at the time held
their first District Conference in St. Lucia and elected Barbara
Jacobs of the Rotaract Club of St. Lucia the first District Rotaract
Representative (DRR) of the District. Since then many more clubs
have been established throughout the District as the movement has
grown and more Rotary clubs invested an interest in Rotaract.
In 1991 the District was briefly
renamed District 4050 before settling on its final name District
7030 on July 1st, 1992.
